This week’s entry will focus mainly on ‘production’, the second of the three parts of video production. Production is the process of actually going out and filming your project, as well as getting all of the props you will need and your sets chosen and set up. There are many important things to know about production and unfortunately this blog entry will barely be able to scratch the surface, but I will try to cover the basics.
In production you are filming your footage, this is where you apply different camera angles and points of view to express the desired effect. How smoothly your production goes depends on the depth in which you went in your pre-production, the more detailed your story board and script, the easier it will be to get your filming done, and done quickly. If you have where each character will end up at from the beginning to the end of each shot, and have all of their actions meticulously scripted, the actors will have an easier time, and it will be a lot less stress for everyone else involved.
Another incredibly important part of production is the equipment you are using. You need to decide what equipment is best for your project (and what is within your means) whether you want to use one camera or two, how many tripods you will need, and how you want each shot set up. Basic camera knowledge is always a good thing to know, and someone on your team should know just about every detail about the cameras, in order to get the best shot possible.
Production can be the most fun step in the process, seeing your script come to life for the first time is an awesome experience, and some of the bloopers you will get will be priceless. I will be sure to go into much further depth with filming locations and camera angles in a future entry, but for now this is enough to get you started on production. There are a lot of terms in video production, and they are all extremely important to know.
